Once a mount and customizations are unlocked, they can be used in all game modes for any and all characters the player creates. Mounts can be obtained in a variety of ways, such as by completing puzzles, finding hidden locations, slaying certain monsters, or completing certain quests. Different types of mounts exist, including demonic horses, flayed horses, and dead horses. Mount trophies can be attached to the saddle or mount's flank. Mounts can be customized via their armor, saddle, and can have trophies dangling from them (said trophies including severed heads). If this happens, the mount is then put on a 30-second cooldown. While mounted, a "fear gauge" is displayed on the horseriding's UI monster attacks will fill the gauge, and if completed, the player is forced to dismount. While mounted, the character's aggro range is greatly decreased, meaning that monsters will not attack on sight, only if the player approaches them. Dismounting puts it on a 10 second cooldown. Speed can be altered by collecting different types of horseshoes. The mount's speed is variable depending on cursor distance, and three charges that make the horse sprint for a short distance. They are used as a means of transportation for traversing across long distances in the open world. Mounts are unlocked through the game's primary questline, specifically upon reaching Act IV and completing the quest Mount: Donan's Favor. Millennia later, their human descendants still retain the practice. Horses were used as mounts by ancient nephalem.
